Explosion, building collapse in New York City
Breaking News. Multiple media sources have confirmed at least one building in East Village Manhattan, New York City has collapsed after explosions. Firefighters and civilians are reportedly stuck inside.
The first floor of the building contained business, including a sushi restaurant and a deli and grocery store. The upper floors are residential.
The New York Fire Department reports on their Twitter feed that the fire has reached seven-alarm status. Alarm in reference to a structure fire generally explains how many firefighters respond, thought the exact meaning can vary depending on the department.
More than 39 units from the fire department have responded as well as 179 first-responders.
The building is mixed occupancy, meaning it contains both residential and businesses.
Authorities said the building, located at 2nd Avenue and 7th Street collapsed around 3:20 p.m.
The New York Post, citing law enforcement sources, said as many as 30 people were hurt.
