Recently our nation has been inundated with some scary stories of attacks during mass gatherings. The Aurora movie theater shooting on July 20, 2012. The Boston Marathon bombing on April 15, 2013. The Mother’s Day parade shooting in New Orleans on May 12, 2013. Many are getting wary of gathering in crowds, but with some proper preparation, you can enjoy a day at the festival.

1. Know several ways out. Whether you are at the ballpark or Warped tour, locate at least two exits in close proximity to your location, and be aware of them at all times.

2. Keep informed. In an emergency, cell phone communication may be compromised. Determine a meeting place in case you and your party or family get separated. It should be nearby the venue, but far enough away to allow for emergency personnel or falling debris. Find an easily recognized landmark and be sure everyone is clear.

3. Against the wall. In the rare case of a stampede indoors, more sideways carefully to a wall, then back up to it. Move along it after the crowd has dissipated. Although it does not happen often, people have been trampled to death by being caught up in the midst of the crowd.

4. Keep your cool. Resist the urge to panic. Panic is the number one killer. Assess the situation and determine the best course of action with a cool head.

5. Be aware. Keep your eyes up off the phone, and scan environment every so often. This can be a bit challenging in light of large volumes of bodies, but try to actively scan the crowd. Look for abnormal behavior such as people moving erratically or against the crowd, or even people moving faster or slower. Or people whose actions and gestures do not seem to match the festivities and energy of the event.

6. Trust your instincts. I can never stress this enough- your gut won’t lie to you. If it seems out of sorts or “wrong” report it or get the hell out of the area and report it as soon as you see someone official.

7. Carry essentials. Water bottle, small first aid kit with a tourniquet, knife or multi tool if allowed. A flashlight is important if you will be indoors- a cell phone light will not penetrate smoke or haze.

8. Identify cover from gunfire. Just in case.

9. Do not live in fear. Things are safer than they appear.

And even safer if you are prepared.

May 12, 2013

At least 17 have been confirmed injured shortly before 2pm local time at a Mothers Day parade in New Orleans.

Police spokeswoman Remi Braden said many of the victims were only grazed and most the wounds weren’t life-threatening. No deaths have been reported.

Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas told reporters that a 10-year-old girl grazed by a bullet was among those wounded in the shooting. She is in good condition. He said three or four people were in surgery, but he didn’t have their conditions.

Serpas said that the procession had been accompanied by officers, who are searching for three to four suspects who reportedly fled the scene on foot.

The Times-Picayune reports there were 200 to 300 people at the event when the gunfire erupted.

Planting nasturtium in containers is an excellent choice for small self- sustaining gardens. Nasturtium is an edible flowering vine that will repel squash bugs, pumpkin beetles, whiteflies, and attracts aphids so be sure to place the containers around your garden- not in them! Nasturtium grows vertically in pots, but can spread in warm areas if planted in the ground, making itself a nuisance. The flowers are typically orange, yellow and red, and the leaves are almost heart like in shape.

Nasturtium is super easy to grow, they don’t care much about soil condition and just like a little water and a sunny area.

The flowers, seeds and leaves are all edible. You can use the flowers as garnish, and leaves in your sandwiches, salads or stir frys. The seeds were used in the 20th century as a replacement for pepper, dried and ground in a pepper-mill or coffee grinder.

Nasturtiums are a nutrient dense plant containing high levels of vitamin C and iron. They are also known to be useful in the breaking up of congestion of the respiratory system and they offer spectacular relief from the symptoms of colds. Nasturtium is also used to encourage the formation of blood cells and can be given as a blood purifier and detoxifier.

As with any plant, remember to harvest only the healthy leaves and flowers, toss out any that look yellowed or diseased.

There are many places you cannot carry a firearm yet many places where surprise attacks occur. One of the best and low key devices you can always have on you for protection is a simple ballpoint pen.

A pen can ward off a would be attacker or be used in much more powerful ways. Simply hold the pen with your thumb firmly over the top end (where the eraser would be if it had one) and jab the attacker’s chest.

If the attacker continues you can use the pen in the same manner to gouge at an eye, throat or the groin, as many times as it takes to get away.
If an attacker has you in a hold, you can use the pen to stab at the hands and arms to break contact.

Jason Bourne used a regular old Bic pen to ward off an attack, but you could get a bit fancier and spend a few dollars more for a sturdier and smoother writing experience. And even the TSA allows ballpoints onto planes, just as long as the pens are not manufactures by a tactical weapons company such as Smith and Wesson, Colt or UZI.

Parker Jotter is a popular pen used by martial arts practitioners as a simple device for personal safety. It has a good feel to it and writes very smooth. Best of all? It looks just like a regular ballpoint pen.

There’s even a self defense pen geared especially for the Zombie apocalypse, and while you are waiting it doubles as a glass breaking tool- great to have if you live near or drive by water regularly.

Self defense can be achieved with any common item around you at any given time.
